Haiti Relief

From ME To Haiti
01/19/10

WGME 13 is proud to team up with the City of Portland and Konbit Sante for a telethon to raise money for the relief efforts in Haiti.  From ME To Haiti begins with live broadcasts from Portland City Hall during Daybreak on Thursday, January 21.  There will also be live broadcasts at Noon, Live at Five and News 13 at 6:00.  Konbit Sante is a non-profit organization based in Portland that has been working to improve healthcare in Cap-Haitien and northern Haiti for nearly a decade.  The organization already has Mainers on the ground in Haiti trying to help with relief efforts.  The money raised during Thursday's telethon will go directly to Konbit Sante's efforts in Haiti.  You'll hear more on just how great the need is, the great work Konbit Sante has already done, and what the group hopes to do in Haiti with your help.  It's a chance to provide desperately needed aid - From ME to Haiti, all day Thursday, only on WGME 13.  For more information, head to healthyhaiti.org.

HAITI - For the last 2 weeks, we've been showing you how local pilots are delivering local donations to areas of desperate need in Haiti.

Like many people, Jimmie Beavers wanted to help the situation in Haiti but wasn't sure what to do, then he heard about BahamasHabitat.org.

Jimmie Beavers/BahamasHabitat.org Pilot: "Just knowing what's going on down there, it certainly makes me apprehensive."

It was a whirlwind 72 hours for Beavers, going from watching a story on a newscast to seeing it first-hand.

This is his business. Beavers owns 37 Arby's Roast Beefs on the Gulf Coast and to get from one to the other, he often uses this: a Cessna 210.

Beavers: "The people I work with, they feel like they're on this trip with me."

Beavers's help came just in time; he called just minutes before Baptist Hospital came through with a plane-load of those orthopedic supplies that are so scarce in Haiti right now.

Once in the Bahamas, Beavers picks up his schedule.

Abe McIntyre/BahamasHabitat.org: "That basically breaks down everything. Your normal day schedule, your frequencies."

And early the next morning, he hit the air.

Beavers made the trip to Les Cayes carrying the external fixators that will keep this doctor from having to search for rebar the next time he needs to fix a broken leg.

Beavers: "Everything is well-coordinated, and a lot of good people down here working very hard, working 24/7 just about. And they're getting something done, but there's still a tremendous amount of work to be done."
