Autism Walk Raises Awareness for Disorder
Dozens of people came out to Southwind Park in Springfield Saturday morning to raise awareness about autism, and to have a little fun in the meantime.
April is National Autism Awareness Month, and the Autism Society of Central Illinois' Take a Step for Autism Walk recognizes the increased rate of the disorder and the lack of a cure for it.
Besides the walk, there was music and fun for the whole family.
"I've worked with these families for, now, over 15 years," Karen Kirkendad of the Autism Society of Central Illinois said. "I know what their struggles are. I know what their day-to-day lives are, and we just wanted to recognize their courage and their dedication to their children by just giving them as much fun and a day of relaxation as we can."
The organization is hoping to raise $30,000. That money will stay in central Illinois to help those families in need.
