Additional Immunizations will Soon be Required for Illinois Students
When your kids head back to school this fall, they're going to need some additional shots. There are new immunization requirements going into effect this coming school year.
Officials with the state health department say each student will need to show proof of receiving a second dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
Students entering kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades will be required to receive a second dose of the chicken pox vaccine.
"You're seeing cases again even with kids that have been vaccinated with one dose or have missed vaccinations for one reason or another, and this second dose will just ensure better coverage for those that receive it," said Bill Moran of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
There will be an additional mandatory vaccine added to the required list for the 2015-2016 school year that prevents a certain type of meningitis.
Students will be required to show proof of receiving that vaccine before starting sixth grade and a second dose before entering the 12th grade.
