Soda Tax Proposal Fizzles at Statehouse
An effort to tax soft drinks may be fizzling out at the statehouse.
The legislation appears stalled in committee. It has yet to be called for any hearings.
The proposal calls for a penny-per-ounce surcharge on sugary drinks sold in sealed containers. That would mean another 12 cents for a 12-ounce can of soda.
The money generated from the tax would have been used to pay for Medicaid programs and other health and education efforts.
