America Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Beatlemania
Fifty years ago today, the Beatles came onto the scene in the United States, forever changing pop culture. The so-called Beatlemania had already captivated Great Britain, but it was their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9 that got the U.S. on board.
The Beatles made such an impact here in the states that UIS now teaches a class on the popular group and how they changed the music scene.
Professor Michael Cheney told us it wasn't always easy for the group.
"For '60, '61, and '62, they used to go over to Hamburg, Germany, and they would perform over there in some fairly rough conditions," Cheney said. "This is where they chalked up 10,000 hours of performing time, and Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point author, talks about how that's what makes people good."
The Beatles have sold more than 209 million albums in the United States alone, and that number rises every day.
