Businesses Pleased With Holiday Walk
More than 30 businesses are participating in this year's holiday walk. Owners say they were anticipating large crowds for the first night. They hope those shoppers will return well after the holiday season.
"It's world-class. Springfield downtown is something that cannot be replicated anywhere," said Marilyn Kushak, owner of Widow at Windsor Antiques.
The trees are out, lights are strung and Santa is on his way. With the holiday season comes more opportunities for downtown shopping.
"Clearly December is very, very busy for us. So we make sure that we have made our trips to Europe and have all the shipments back," said Windsor.
Widow At Windsor Antiques has been in business for more than eight years. They have used their location downtown as an advantage by supporting the annual holiday walk for another year.
"When we started up our business, people thought we would be moving out and going to the suburbs, and we said no, we want to support downtown," said Windsor.
The Old Capitol Holiday Walks encourage residents to shop local, but it's not just those living in Springfield that come through the doors.
"We have a lot of repeat people come in and say, 'We were here last year. We are looking for this item or this specific artist,'" said Laurie Rogers, a local artist.
Rogers sells her pieces at The Blue Door. A late Thanksgiving may have cut holiday shopping days short, but business is booming.
"I know our sales are up from last year, which is wonderful, and it's been steady. It's been very busy today," said Rogers.
And while business owners want everyone to shop local year-round, December brings a little more cheer.
"Definitely this time of year it makes it a little bit more fun with the shoppers that it does bring in, and every year we continue to see growth and new faces," said Jodi Cole, owner of Flea Market to Fabulous.
If you missed out on Wednesday's Old Capitol Holiday Walk, there are more on December 6, December 11 and December 18.
