Blood Donations Low During the Holidays
Officials with the Central Illinois Community Blood Center say blood donations drop over the holidays, and they're urging people to take the time to donate blood this month.
Officials at the blood center say December is one of the most challenging months to recruit donors. That's because donors are busy with the hustle and bustle of the holidays. But accidents still happen and surgeries don't get postponed, and donating blood only takes about an hour.
"We are a not-for-profit that provides blood to our local hospitals. There is no other place for us to get that blood except for volunteer blood donors, so when someone comes through the door to donate, it truly is a gift of life," said Tara Matheson of the Central Illinois Community Blood Center.
Officials say all blood types are needed, but RH negative is particularly in short supply. If you would like to donate blood, you can call the blood center to make an appointment or just stop by. The blood center recommends eating and drinking plenty of liquids before donating blood.
