Springfield Man Breaks Stair-Climbing Record
A Springfield man has unofficially broken a Guinness world record.
Guinness still needs to make it official, but Justin Stewart climbed the steps in the Hilton for 12 straight hours Saturday.
Stewart topped the Hilton 116 times. That's a total of 38,000 feet--more than 61,500 steps.
The previous record of 33,000 was set in Philadelphia back in 2011.
Stewart is a PE teacher. Several of his students came to show support, and actually climbed behind him.
"Seeing all my runners and athletes and students out and climbing behind me, there's no way I could slow down," Stewart said. "Some of them did 12, 13, 14 climbs behind me. It's just amazing to be that kind of influence on them."
November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and Stewart has been participating in the American Lung Association's annual Fight for Air Climb since 2011.
Stewart has taken home several awards, including fastest climber in both 2012 and 2013.
