Shutdown Could Cause Temporary State Layoffs
The federal government shutdown could cause temporary layoffs at the state level.
Agencies that could be impacted include the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Veterans Affairs, and Military Affairs.
We talked with officials at IEMA today, and they said as of right now, they have no plans to cut federally funded workers. But they would have to re-evaluate if the shutdown lasts more than a couple of weeks.
During the last shutdown in 1995, about 1,200 employees were temporarily laid off, and hired back after two weeks.
