AmeriCorps Celebrates 20th Anniversary
A celebration of volunteering brought hundreds together today in Springfield. It's all part of AmeriCorps' 20th anniversary.
Gov. Pat Quinn and his Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service announced the influx of $7.5 million.
The money will enable 900 volunteers in 29 AmeriCorps programs to better serve Illinois communities.
"It's a mix of celebration as well as just training and understanding what they're a part of," Serve Illinois Executive Director Brandon Bodor said. "So all the members serving in the AmeriCorps are assigned to either a public agency or a nonprofit or a university. So this is an opportunity for them to see that they're a part of something much larger than just that nonprofit or that community."
Twenty years ago, President Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act. Since then, Bodor said, 30,000 Illinoisans have taken up the charge to volunteer.
