21 Arrested in Christian County Drug Bust

Nearly two dozen people are caught in a police drug dragnet in Christian County. Law enforcement agencies, including the Christian County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police, and Taylorville Police Department, spent months investigating drug cases. Now, the fruits of that labor come to fruition.

The Christian County Sheriff tells us they arrested the main drug distributor for Taylorville, who lives just three houses down from Taylorville High School.

"The school is a block away, and kids go by this house twice a day. Every day," said John Hough, who lives across the street from one of the people arrested.

He's lived in his house for 40 years. and said he never had any problems with the people living in in his neighborhood--until about a year and a half ago.

"I watch drug sales go down quite often across the street. Quite often," said Hough.

Hough said he worries about his grandchildren's safety when they visit. It's a concern shared by Taylorville resident Roger Hampton, who has a teenage daughter.

"I have a daughter. I've lived here and I like a clean community," said Hampton.

And now, the streets of Taylorville are cleaner after the arrests of 21 people who were taken to jail on drug charges.

"One of the things they distributed quite a bit of was prescription drugs. They steal prescription drugs from friends that they know, or they know how to say the right things to the physicians," said Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp.

Those prescription drugs included Oxycodone and Adderall.

"That's a medicine prescribed for attention deficit typically. And some people believe, I think, that it might help them. Especially if someone says, 'it helps me with my attention, it helps me with alertness. I can stay awake longer,'" said Kettelkamp.

But Kettelkamp said prescriptions are just the beginning of the drug problem in Christian County.

"There's methamphetamines. We've got, unfortunately, we've got heroin coming into our county now. We've got cocaine that's in our county. Unfortunately, we have it all," said Kettelkamp.

Some of those arrested have already been bonded out of the Christian County Jail. But Kettelkamp said law enforcement will be keeping a close eye on them and other drug activity in Christian County. He said the drug investigation isn't over and more arrests are expected to be made.

Those arrested are:

  • Rickey Abbott, 35, arrested for delivery of a controlled substance
  • Michael Bennett, 25, arrested for unlawful delivery of cannabis
  • Damery Binkley, 31, arrested for unlawful delivery of cannabis
