Lathan Running for 96th District Seat
The race for the 96th District in Illinois is heating up, as a local woman announces she'll run for office.
During Saturday's Unity Rally at Comer Park, Gina Lathan announced her candidacy. The incumbent of District 96, which includes large portions of Decatur and Springfield, is Democratic state Rep. Sue Scherer. Scherer was elected in the previous race.
"I am a strong candidate," Lathan said. "I am a strong candidate because I have the business expertise. I have the experience and background in working in state government. I also am an active community member, and I have a clear understanding of the immediate issues throughout the 96th District."
Lathan said she decided to run for several reasons. One reason in particular is job development and the need for more work. She also said she has spent much of her professional life working in the community.
