A Generous Donation Brings a New Drug Dog to Sang. Co.
The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office is adding a new officer to its ranks, and we're told she's got quite the "bark."
Rajah is a 15-month-old Belgian Malinois, also known as a Belgian Shepherd dog. Rajah is joining two other drug dogs in the department's K-9 Unit. Belgian Malinois are used worldwide by police agencies and the military as drug and bomb-sniffing dogs. They're also widely used in search and rescue.
Rajah is replacing another dog, who was injured in a training accident and forced to retire. She was purchased after a donation from the Landmark Automotive Group in Springfield.
"When Sean talked to me about it, it was a couple of weeks before I got back to him because I wanted to make sure that we utilized this generous donation in an appropriate manner," Undersheriff Jack Campbell said. "And Sheriff Williamson and I sat around and talked about it and was like, 'what do we need the most?' And ironically, we were faced with the injury of this dog almost simultaneously, and so it really was a no-brainer."
Rajah and her handler are currently in training and are expected to finish in December.
