Three Arrested for Alleged Copper Theft
Three people responsible for many area copper thefts over the last two months are behind bars.
Thomas Zepp, Steven Zepp, and Steven Bramblett were taken into custody after witnesses put in a call to the police with reports of suspicious behavior.
The Springfield Police Department determined the most recent theft occurred at a vacant home, where a bag of tools and a copper pipe were missing.
The subjects are being charged with burglary, theft, and criminal damage to a residence.
"We were able to track down the car that they saw the people in, ID the suspects that they saw carrying the bags, and then trace it back to a burglary that happened not too far away, and ended up making three arrests on this," Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher said.
Buscher also said copper theft is often hard to trace, but the cooperation of both the witnesses and the scrap yard helped identify the suspects.
The subjects have been connected to selling more than 130 pounds of copper so far.
