New Aldi Opens on Northeast Side
Grocery store chain Aldi is moving into another new store in Springfield. This time, it's on the city's northeast side.
Aldi opened the store on North Dirksen Parkway Wednesday. After a ribbon cutting, there was a public opening, product sampling, and on-site sweepstakes. This store replaces their location at North Fifth Street and North Grand, which closed Tuesday. The opening of this store comes on the heels of Aldi moving its location at Chatham and Wabash to a new store on South 6th Street in 2011.
"We knew the facilities were aging," Heather Moore from Aldi Foods said. "We also knew we needed to expand the size the facilities. So, both of these needed to be replaced. So, we still wanted to serve those customers but still go to areas where there are large traffic patterns."
This new Aldi comes after the recent opening of a new County Market in the hospital district and a Hy-Vee grocery store under construction on MacArthur Boulevard.
Springfield Alderman Frank Lesko, who attended the grand opening, called the new Aldi an "asset, and any competition in town is good to keep prices down."
Aldi plans to open another store on Springfield's west side, off Veterans Parkway, in late October.
