Lincoln Tomb Set to Close Temporarily
A popular tourist destination is set for a temporary closure.
Lincoln's tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery is closing for six months, starting this October, to fix peeling paint and cracking stonework.
The state has allocated $700,000 for the repairs out of the state construction budget.
The team is still in the process of pinning down exactly what work will be done to maintain the tomb's interior.
They hope to have a better idea in a couple weeks.
"President Lincoln was such an extraordinary figure that we want his final resting place to be extraordinary, as well," Chris Wills of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency said. "You just have to occasionally repair some small water damage or fix some cracks or whatnot, so it looks as good as the place really ought to look."
The renovations will only close down the inside of the tomb. The outside will remain open to visitors.
Officials hope it will be open in time to celebrate Lincoln's birthday in February.
