Students Return to New School After Devastating Disaster
After more than four years of construction, students at Ben-Gil Elementary finally step into their new school.
In 2009, the former building sustained mine subsidence damage, making it unusable.
Since then, students have been shuffled between temporary and shared classrooms.
$25 million was put into building this new facility in Gillespie to ensure that it's safe and secure.
The new state-of-the-art building is equipped with updated technology and is a "green" facility.
"It's an energy efficient school, so it was built and situated on the acreage to take advantage of the sunlight," Assistant Superintendent Joseph Tieman said. "It also has geothermal heat. It has light sensors."
Tieman said if you wish to get a glimpse of the new facility, they're providing tours. Just call the school office to make an appointment.
