Students Rally to Save Hands-On Building Program
A building program at Taylorville High School is in jeopardy of losing the hands-on portion of its class.
The Building Trades program has been in place since 1970, and students in that class have built 26 homes throughout the city.
Students, past and present, are speaking up against the school's move to a classroom-based curriculum, saying you can't learn to build a house without hands-on experience.
Those in opposition have collected nearly 1,000 petitions to save the program.
"The community loses a lot more than a class," former student Jeff Himstedt said. "We have hundreds of contractors and tile layers and brick layers, people who hang drywall, because of this class. A lot of people don't know what this class entails, but even after graduation, it's just, the work ethic, the way he teaches kids, it's unbelievable. It's unbelievable what he can teach these kids."
Himstedt and others plan to formally address the school board at the next meeting, scheduled for Monday, August 12.
The superintendent for the Taylorville School District was not available for comment.
