Stanley Cup Comes to Springfield
The Stanley Cup returned to Springfield this morning.
Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz brought the cup to a legislative reception at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, to a private event at the Sangamo Club, and then to a group photo with the Illinois Air National Guard.
Fans lined up to take pictures with the trophy when it arrived at the Capital Airport this morning and when it left the library at 9 a.m.
"The Cup is the Cup," Wirtz said. "It really takes on a life of its own. You talk about the number one guest, and that's the Cup. We flew into the airport and people were hanging from the fence, and you don't realize what effect that cup has."
This is the second time in four seasons the Cup has made its way to Springfield.
Officials said it's also possible the Cup could return to Springfield in August, possibly for the state fair.
