Volunteers Clean Up Sangamon River
Central Illinois residents are doing their part by collecting trash around the Sangamon River. It's part of the Friends of Sangamon Valley Annual River Cleanup. Volunteers took canoes, stacking debris from along the banks of the river.
People were excited to get out and help. Some said the river is a crucial part of our ecosystem.
"Tires do dissolve over time," committee leader George Sinclair said. "So you may throw it in there and think, 'oh, it's just gonna roll downstream.' Well, eventually it dissolves, and it poisons the fish and it poisons us. You know, this is our backup water supply in case the lake goes dry again."
Sangamon County pitched in their services to the volunteers. The county picked up the trash from the river. The team is proud to do the cleanup, especially since part of the river was used by Abraham Lincoln.
