Suspicious Fire Worries Jacksonville Residents
On a block where abandoned homes are common, one house being renovated will have to clear out fire damage after smoke and flames took over the inside.
"I'm afraid that one of these times someone's house is gonna get set on fire with people in it," one neighbor said. "That's my fear."
They neighbor who didn't want their identity shown said the fires are common near Jacksonville's Doolin Street. Saturday morning, the fire department was called to this home after flames were seen burning on the inside.
Firefighters and police are still investigating the cause.
"Nobody was home at the time," sergeant Olivia Mefford said. "There is just different factors that can be labeled into it as deeming it suspicious. Namely, the fact that there is no power to the residence."
She says Jacksonville experienced a rash of arsons a couple of years ago. The neighbor we spoke with said the problem still exists in town.
"We've had maybe four or five fires in the last couple of months," a neighbor said. "It's getting to be a rough neighborhood. It used to be a decent neighborhood, but now it's turning into a rough neighborhood again."
Houses surrounding this neighbor's yard have been affected by fires. Neighbors said they have seen people setting fires to property.
"I wish the fires would stop," the neighbors said. "I wish the people would stop acting like morons, complete morons, and start having respect for other people's property."
