Summer Reading Program
Now that kids are in summer break, they aren't exercising their minds as often.
Officals with Springfield's public schools are challenging kids, to take part in the read five and beyond program.
The program is meant to keep kids reading over summer break.
At the end of the school year, teachers send students home with five free books.
Research has shown that kids who continually read over summer break, are better prepared for school in the fall.
Donna Treadwell with the district says, "Kids can go online and they can actually keep track of all of their reading minutes per week, per day, and for the entire summer. And some of the schools actually compete with one another to see which school has the most reading minutes for the summer."
The schools also hold celebrity reads in nearby neighborhoods every Wednesday morning at ten.
