More Single Fathers In US
Over the years, the number of fathers with full custody of their children has increased, meaning more men are taking on more responsibility.
"Kids need their fathers for sure, especially boys particularly," Dustin Mackey said. He takes care of his mini me, Ian. Father's Day is just one of the days out of the year that Dustin spends with his son.
"I love him a lot yea, he's a spitting image of me," Mackey said. The US Census Bureau reports that close to 400,000 men were single fathers in 1970.
Just last year, that number increased to two million. "Teenagers and young adults, they grow and they don't have that male influence, there are so many problems that they have. I don't want my children going through that when they get older in life," Cecil Crawford said.
He shares joint custody with his ex wife. His children are not with him all the time, but he says he strives to be the best father he can be.
"I know a lot of guys who only get their children every other weekend, you're talking about four or six days a month. That doesn't mean they are unimportant still doesn't mean that they shouldn't do as much as they can," Crawford said.
Bob Zettler has had full custody of his children since they were 14. He looks back over the many obstacles he faced being a single parent.
"Where some people say oh I can take off for an evening, I've got a baby sitter, I've got a grandparent or whatever. I didn't have that," Zettler said.
Bob managed juggling a career and taking care of his children. He didn't let life's hurdles stop him from being a father.
"You're there no matter when. If they call you or need you, you be there and I encourage all parents to do that," Zettler said.
