Festival Season Kicks Off in Springfield
It's the kickoff of Springfield's summer festival season, and downtown is gearing up for a busy weekend.
The Sixth Annual Art of Illinois Wine Festival is taking place this weekend. It provides wine enthusiasts the opportunity to visit all of their favorite area wine makers in one location.
Also this week, you can check out the 52nd Annual Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair. About 150 juried artists have reserved booths. Returning this year is a cool project called the community mural artwork.
"One of our local artists donates a piece, we blow it up through our press to 380 times, the children come into the tent, and they get to paint the tiles," art fair chairman Jason Elvidge said. "Then it dries and goes onto a board. Then it's a collage or mosaic of the entire work of art."
Saturday is also the first Saturday for the Old Capitol Farmers and Artisans Market on Adams Street between Second and Fifth streets.
Finally, roughly 3,000 people are expected to attend the Springfield Pridefest.
Organizers say there could be as many as 40,000 people downtown this weekend.
