IDOT Campaigns for Work Zone Safety
Today, safety advocates were on hand at the Rail Splitter Rest Area on I-55 to distribute information and discuss safety in work zones to the traveling public. It's National Work Zone Awareness Week, and representatives as well as officials want you to "embrace the orange."
It's a new campaign to ensure all are aware of the dangers everyone faces when driving through work zones.
"We also want people to be aware of Scott's Law, that any time you see a state police vehicle or a construction vehicle, you do need to move over to your left or to the right, depending on where the workers are, to give them plenty of room so they can work," highway maintenance worker Louie Price said.
Construction workers are not the only ones at risk. Those driving their vehicles in work zone areas are also at risk.
Nearly 90 percent of fatalities in work zones are motorists. IDOT encourages everyone to slow down and follow the signs in work zones.
