Springfield Chamber Supporting Tax Increase
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is throwing its support behind a proposed sales tax and sewer rate increase. The rate hikes would go to fix the city's aging infrastructure and sewer system.
The increases would help fund the nearly $87 million needed for infrastructure improvements and the $55 million needed to get the sewer system up to EPA standards.
The chamber said these increases are greatly needed to enhance the quality of life in the city and to grow the economy.
"This is about economic development, and maintaining jobs to begin with, and in the future, being able to grow jobs," Chamber of Commerce CEO Steward Sandstrom said. "But first thing is to get the maintenance back up to where it should have been a long time ago."
The chamber said 70 roads are closed each year due to sewer and infrastructure problems.
