Red Cross Honors Local Heroes
For the eighth year in a row, the Capital Area chapter of the American Red Cross is honoring several local heroes for service to the community. This morning's Heroes Breakfast gave a shout-out to people from Springfield, Chatham, Taylorville, Shelbyville, and Gillespie. Some were recognized for a specific heroic act, while others were honored for their lifetime of service to the community.
One group honored was the Illinois Patriot Guard.
"None of us have joined the Patriot Guard to be honored," honoree Dan "Dozer" Hough said. "We want to do the honoring. So it's a bit of a role reversal for us today."
"I am a registered nurse, and that's what I do for a living," Angela Brooks, who was nominated for a Healthcare Hero award, said. "So helping people has always been a part of my everyday life. But to be recognized for it is a huge honor."
Brooks was honored for helping a motorist who suffered a medical emergency.
Six local youths were also recognized for their winning stories about a personal hero, which they submitted for a writing contest.
