Springfield: Crews Patching Potholes

The recent cold snaps bringing snowy and icy conditions in the last month have taken a toll on the roads in the Capital City. You've probably noticed it if you've dodged a pothole. This time of year, when hot and cold temperatures go back and forth, is the busiest for public crews patching roads.

When driving down certain streets in Springfield, drivers hold on
for what can be a bumpy ride.

"Kinda shakes the car," Jesse Cooper said.

"I feel every single pothole in a very big way," Sheryl Wise said. "It seems like they're just getting worse. It seems like they're getting worse -- it's the nature of the beast."

Crews are starting to shovel out of Springfield's pothole mess, filling in troubled spots throughout the city.

"This is time of year through the freeze and thaw is going on, we have extra hands on deck right now," Public Works Director Mark Mahoney said.

Cold snaps and snow plows salting for safety tend to tear up the roads.
Public works said the pot holes are not as bad as they could be.

"We'd probably be in a lot worse of condition if it hadn't been for the mild winter we've had in the last couple of years," Mahoney said.

Up to $6,000 is bid out a year for materials to patch streets. Half of Springfield roads are considered in poor or fair condition.

"We see bent wheels all the time, broken wheels," store manager Chad Loy said.

Brahler Auto Tire Center sees the aftermath in its shop.

"Wear and tear on shocks and struts," Loy said. "I don't know if there's a recommendation with people steering away from potholes and stuff like that--so yeah, you can slow down."

Slow down for crews who are still shoveling out of the last storm. A cold mix material is being used that doesn't need to be hot to hold together. When temperatures warm, a hot mix will be packed down to smooth out the ride.

"I'm constantly trying to dodge the potholes," Wise said.

About $9 million in infrastructure repairs have been budgeted for the next fiscal year. About 10 percent of that will go toward concrete patching.

If there's a pothole in your neighborhood, Public Works crews will come check it out. Just call 217-789-2246.
