AARP, CUB Oppose Ameren Rate Hike
There's a lot of hot air being spewed over the future of how much you'll pay for natural gas in central Illinois. AARP and the Citizens Utility Board teamed up today to sound a warning to consumers about what they call an arrogant push by Ameren Illinois Energy to get a bill passed in the legislature allowing for automatic rate hikes without state oversight.
Ameren said its 10-year plan will actually save customers money in the long term, while creating hundreds of jobs and modernizing its natural gas delivery system.
AARP and CUB said the legislation that Ameren is seeking is merely an attempt to skirt consumer protections against unfair increases and hit Ameren customers with the equivalent of a natural gas tax of up to $414 million.
Ameren denies that claim, saying the Illinois Commerce Commission will closely monitor the process and level penalties if Ameren Illinois fails to comply. AARP and CUB are urging Ameren customers to study SB 1665 and HB 2414, then contact their legislators to voice their concerns.
