Poetry Out Loud State Finalists Perform
The Illinois Arts Council chose 16 regional winners to perform at this year's Poetry Out Loud state final this afternoon. The finalists were chosen from a pool of more than 5,800 students statewide.
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for high school students. Poems are selected from a list of 700 classics.
"Students are judged on the accuracy of the recitation," Sheila Walk, a program assistant from the Springfield Area Arts Council, said. "It must be precisely as the poet wrote it."
The Illinois Poetry Out Loud state champion will receive $300 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. in April to compete for the national championship. The state champion's school will also receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.
