Preparing for a Nuclear Disaster
A nuclear disaster is an accident away for central Illinois, considering the location of the Clinton Power Plant. That's why emergency responders from IEMA and several counties, along with Exelon, participated in a two-day nuclear power accident drill this week. The exercise started in Clinton Tuesday, with a mock radiological event. Wednesday in Springfield, emergency responders practiced testing items like milk, eggs, and the water supply for radiation levels.
"With all the various power stations we have here, we'd like to do it for each one on a rotating basis," Daren Perrero from IEMA said. "If you can be prepared at any one site, you should be prepared at all the sites."
FEMA evaluted the units of government during the exercise. They will provide their findings by the end of this week.
