Durbin: Military Cuts Hurt Veterans' Families
As we first told you earlier this week, looming spending cuts in Washington could have a big impact on our nation's and state's security. Not only that, but Sen. Dick Durbin said cutting off money to the Department of Defense would hit veterans and their families hard.
At a time when veteran suicides are high, Durbin said, cutting money spent to counsel a veteran's family doesn't make sense.
The senior senator from Illinois also said a long-term plan needs to be made that would increase permanent jobs and reduce the deficit.
"We need to do this in a thoughtful way, in a balanced way," Durbin said. "We need to bring in revenue from those who can afford to pay more in taxes by closing our loopholes, and bring our deficit down in a sensible way."
If Congress can't come to a compromise, the spending cuts would take effect March 1.
