Police Imposter Strikes Twice Over Weekend

The search for a man pretending to be a cop continues. Now, two more women who were traveling alone say someone impersonating a police officer tried to stop them Saturday.

The reports come from two different counties, bringing the total to five reports in one week.

Five women have seen the flashing lights and now the imposter has been spotted in both Sangamon and Morgan counties.

County officials are trying to get the fake officer off the streets before someone gets hurt. This past weekend, two women came close to becoming victims.

Morgan County sheriff Randy Duvendack said the impersonator tried to pull over a woman driving in rural Morgan County Saturday night. She drove into a gas station and the imposter turned around.

Another similar incident happened Friday night, just miles away.

"I hope somebody out there isn't doing this just to have a little fun, because it's not funny," Duvendack said. "We do take it serious."

Before Saturday night's run-in with the impersonator, another woman in Sangamon County almost became a victim of a fake officer. This marked the third incident with an imposter for the county.

"This case the female just happened to look into the rearview mirror and saw a white car behind her with a red and blue flashing light," Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell said.

Campbell explained how the 18 year-old victim pulled into a driveway near the intersection of Old Salem Lane and Farmingdale Road in Sangamon County. Her quick thinking made the impersonator continue driving.

"We are afraid that we've gotten some publicity out there, and some of these young kids, especially teenage boys, are going to start horsing around and start copycatting and really put themselves and others in danger by doing this," Campbell said.

Duvendack wants people to know that Morgan County officers will understand if some may not want to pull over in certain parts of the county because they fear becoming a victim.

"Look for a well-lit area where there's people," Duvendack said. "Officers now are going to be well aware of what you are doing."

Duvendack also told us the county's unmarked cars rarely pull people over. Those are only used by detectives.
