Go Red for Women Month Also About Men
February is Go Red for Women Month, to raise awareness and help fight heart disease. But like women, heart disease is also the leading cause of death for men in the United States.
Sam McGaw suffered a heart attack in 2006.
"I had slight pressure in my chest but I didn't have the strong pain in my arms," McGaw said. "The bigger problem was I felt like I had every tooth in my head was hurting. So, I had severe jaw pain."
Now, Sam is making sure he doesn't go through that again, taking a cardiac rehab class at Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois in Springfield.
"I do it to keep myself in decent shape," McGaw said. "The aerobics is great. I do it for 50 minutes, three times a week."
While February is Go Red for Women month, health experts want to remind men heart disease should be on their mind too. The Centers for Disease Control reports heart disease kills one in every four women and men.
"If you are over the age of 65, if you are a man, if you have hypertension, if you have high cholesterol, if you have family genetics or siblings have heart disease, these are all things that should prompt you to seek medical treatment even before you have symptoms," Dr. Nilesh Goswami from the Prairie Heart Institute said.
Symptoms to be aware of include
In Illinois, cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, caused more than 34,000 deaths in 2008 (the latest figures). That amounts to 33 percent of deaths that year.
