12-Year-Old Saves Family From House Fire
Maddison LaBrier spent Saturday doing chores with her grandmother.
"I just don't really think I'm that big of a hero," Maddison said.
The 12-year-old's family thinks otherwise. The day was like any other weekend at home until something went terribly wrong in the basement.
"I went down to put clothes in the washer machine and in the dryer and there was a fire next to the dryer," Maddison said.
At first, Maddison panicked, but quickly got herself together. She ran to alert her grandparents without any hesitation.
"Very proud of her that she's smart of enough to know what to do," Janet Hattaway, Maddison's grandmother, said.
"No idea, like I said, I was asleep," Maddison's grandfather, Max Hattaway, said.
Max tried frantically to save his home of 23 years.
"We went down to see about it, grab the fire extinguishers," Max said. "Tried to do what we could, but once we saw that beyond us we got out, left everything and just went out door."
The Hattaways visited the home to salvage what they could, but it wasn't much.
"My house, everybody's okay, everybody's out, but it's my house," Janet Hattaway said.
The family is staying at a motel for the time being. They may have lost their belongs, but Maddison is grateful that their still together.
"People can't be replaced, but houses and stuff can," Maddison said.
The family has received donations from local churches, as well as the community. Right now, they are looking to find a home to rent until the insurance company decides how to move forward with their property.
The Red Cross is pitching in to help the family with motel costs. They have also received donations from Aldi's grocery store.
