Constituents Rally Outside Davis' Office
He's been in office less than a month, but already, central Illinois residents are rallying outside Congressman Rodney Davis' Champaign district office. It was part of a national day of action calling for "fair taxes, not cuts." Three organizations came together to urge Congress to stop reducing the deficit. They said too many congressional leaders see Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security as an easy way to balance the budget.
"We built this country together," Citizen Action/Illinois Organizing Director John Gaudette said. "We should fix it together. And when those that make the most, as far as wealthy national corporations and the richest Americans, do the very least or nothing at all in the first two rounds of cuts, we have to ask the question, 'Why not?'"
To avoid the $1 trillion in across-the-board cuts, Gaudette said, Congress should close tax loopholes and corporate tax breaks.
