Department of Agriculture Launches New Campaign
There's a new campaign to encourage you to buy local fruits and veggies. The Illinois Department of Agriculture started the "Where Fresh Is" campaign to help the local economy and local vendors.
The campaign will distribute materials highlighting the Illinois produce to 200 grocery stores and 100 farmers markets. If consumers increase buying locally grown food by 10 percent, they're hoping to see economic activity grow by $20 billion a year.
"We want those small businesses that are maybe one or two man operations to continue to thrive, we want the consumers to be able to know what they are buying and that they are buying Illinois, and I think this gives us a nice way for retailers and farmers markets can get involved and help those small businesses," Jennifer Tirey from the Department of Agriculture said.
The Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications from stores and markets that want to participate in the "Where Fresh Is" campaign. All of the materials are free to those who want to participate.
