Cullerton Pushing for Pension Overhaul
Illinois Senate President John Cullerton wants to move forward with two big issues at the statehouse: a pension overhaul and legalizing gay marriage.
The Chicago Democrat is stressing the need for addressing Illinois' pension problem, which is the worst in the nation. Cullerton said Standard & Poor's recent credit rating downgrade should motivate lawmakers to act. He introduced Senate Bill 1 after lawmakers were sworn in this month. The bill combines a Senate-approved measure along with a bill that failed to get a House roll call. He said he's working to get support.
