Warrant Issued in Cedar Street Murder
UPDATED WITH VIDEO January 2, 5:56 p.m.
A break in the capital city's first homicide of 2013 has led police to issue an arrest warrant for murder and other charges.
Springfield police announced they know who gunned down a man on his front porch early New Year's Day.
Jodeci Commer is wanted for first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Those charges are in connection to the shooting death of DeShawn Jones. Jones was shot and killed on a front porch at 1924 E. Cedar St. around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Crime scene investigators spent New Year's Day combing the area for evidence, even taking the molds of footprints in the snow.
Patrol officers have been looking for Commer, and they've also called in the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.
"I'm pretty sure he knows we're trying to find him," Springfield Police Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher said. "That's why I'm going ahead and putting it out to the media. A lot of times when we get an arrest warrant for somebody, we won't make it known, so we can catch them. They won't go underground and try to hide on us. But this one I think will be more effective to get it out to the public. If somebody seems him or knows where he's at and they call us with that information, we'll be able to get him into custody quicker."
The murder of DeShawn Jones happened just one day after two people were killed in a home on North Ninth Street. Springfield police continue to investigate that as well, and have not made any arrests in that case.
An autopsy for Jones is scheduled for Thursday.
