More Apartments for Disabled Open in Springfield
People in Springfield living with disabilities who are trying to get by now have a safe place to call home.
Hope Springs Apartments is a new residential facility for people with disabilities. It includes clients of the Community Support Network. It's a program of the SIU School of Medicine, offering counseling and treatment for people dealing with mental illness. Currently, some clients are living in bad housing in high-crime sections of town.
"A structure like this gives them a chance for socialization," SIU Director of Community Support Trisha Mallot said. "It gives them a chance to interact with other people that they don't have in their current living environments. But I'm also hopeful that it gives them a place they feel safe, that they can call home and be proud of."
The new apartments are close to city resources, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and transportation.
