Decatur Police Investigating Second Fatal Shooting in 36 Hours

Police in Decatur need your help tonight to find two suspects who shot a young man to death in a city park.

It's the second fatal shooting in the Soy City in 36 hours.

Officers responded to Decatur's Galloway Park for a shooting around 11:00 p.m. Monday.

When they arrived, they found 21-year-old Jarvas Thomas dead in a vehicle.

An autopsy confirms he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Family members are mourning a nice person who they say was getting his life back on track. People living near the park are wondering whether to leave the area.

"It's peaceful over here," said one woman who lives near the park but didn't want to be identified. "I've been here for four years and I've never seen anything like this happen, never."

The mother is shaken by the murder.

"I've got boys and I'm scared for them, because they used to go up to the park and play basketball all the time," she said.

Carla Spitzer lives across the street from the park. She says it's a favorite for children in the neighborhood.

"You'll see groups of young teens and kids," Spitzer said. "People will bring their kids over in cars and watch them play on the equipment. The young kids in the summer are usually grouping up and talking,"

She's also noticed more people congregating in the isolated areas.

"There's a lot of cars that park in that long road that goes by the side of the pavilion there," Spitzer said. "And that's pretty alienated back there. Most houses don't have a real good view of that."

The city and park district police departments are investigating the events leading up to their grim discovery Monday night.

One neighbor isn't sure she can continue to live in the area.

"I'm thinking about moving because I have children and I don't want them to grow up and be around anything like this," Spitzer said. "It's a tragedy, and in your own neighborhood, somewhere you wouldn't think anything like this would happen."

Police are looking for two white males. The first is 5'7", 130 pounds, armed with a gun. The second is 5'10", 170 pounds.

If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 217- 423-TIPS.
