Medical Providers: Make EMS an "Essential Service"
Medical service providers from across the state are teaming up with the American Heart Association to ask lawmakers to prioritize emergency care.
The coalition is forming in response to what it calls a growing problem in Illinois. The group says shrinking resources are putting lives at risk.
EMS currently isn't legally classified as an essential service in Illinois. The Illinois EMS wants lawmakers to change that.
"I think if we don't do something, it'll lead to more ambulance services closing their doors, and, eventually, more morbidity and mortality," Gregory Scott of the McLean County Area EMS System said.
The coalition plans to push for legislative efforts in Springfield to strengthen the resources for emergency medical care in the state. The group would like lawmakers to dedicate state funding for EMS services.
