Preparedness is Key When Facing Winter Weather
Cold weather is upon us. Will you be ready when Mother Nature strikes? Officials said preparedness is the key.
When traveling, have things like a blanket, flashlight, and plenty of fuel, just in case you become stranded.
You also want to make sure your home is ready for winter. Furnaces should be checked to make sure they are working properly. If you do lose power in your home, officials say flashlights are better than candles or kerosene heaters.
And when it comes to shoveling snow, think about your health.
"We also remind people if you're out of shape, remember that shoveling show does cause a number of heart attacks every year," Urbana Fire Department Chief Mike Dilley said. "So think about that. A few dollars to hire somebody with a snowblower. Just be careful about these types of things."
If you do have to be outside during below-zero temperatures, make sure you're dressed properly. Frostbite doesn't take that long to occur on exposed skin. A hat, gloves, and a coat are a must.
