Hip Hop Artists Give Winter Gear to Elementary Students
For the second year in a row, a local group of hip-hop performers passed out free hats, gloves, and scarves to students at Matheny-Withrow Elementary in Springfield.
The fundraising begins with the annual Torch Tuesday open mic night held in downtown Springfield. The group's goal is to prove that rap music can have a positive effect on the community.
"It's a hip-hop based movement just showing we're more than a gangster culture or more than things that are portrayed on the news or in the media," Aaron Phillips of Torch Tuesday said. "We do charity work and we are real people with real issues."
The members also spend much of November and December holding silent auctions and raffles to raise money for different charitable events throughout the year.
