Japanese Students Deliver Gettysburg Address in Springfield
Today, five students traveling all the way from Japan delivered the Gettysburg Address in Springfield in honor of its anniversary.
The event took place at the Old State Capitol, where they celebrated the 149th anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
The two high school students and three junior high students won a trip here from Springfield's sister city in Ashikaga, Japan, after winning an essay contest.
"One hundred were selected to write an essay taking a concept of the speech from 19th century America and relating it to a problem in 21st century Japan," Carol Zerkle of the Sister Cities Association of Springfield said.
While the students are here, they plan on visiting the Lincoln sites, and have already seen the movie "Lincoln."
