Two Armed Robberies Hit U of I Saturday
University of Illinois police are stressing safety following two armed robberies near campus early Saturday morning. The first incident took place around 2:00 Saturday morning in the 400-block of East Healey Street in Champaign. According to police, an armed suspect demanded money and cell phones. About 20 minutes later, another armed robbery took place--this time in the 600-block of East Clark Street in Champaign. In that robbery, the armed suspect demanded a couple get on the ground and empty their pockets.
Police are reminding students that even though the campus might seem empty during the holiday break, they will still be patrolling as usual, and you should contact them if you see anything suspicious.
"If you call us and it turns out to be nothing, that's good," UIPD Deputy Chief Skip Frost said. "But if you don't call us and it turns out to be something, that's not good. So if you see something that requires police intervention, call us."
We're told the suspects in both robberies were armed with black handguns. If you have any information about either incident, call Crimestoppers at 217-373-TIPS.
