Clinton Police Investigate Crime Spree
Clinton police say eight businesses have been targeted in nine burglaries all in the last few months. Police are not sure if the break-ins are related, but they do have similarities. All were in the same area of Clinton in the wee hours of the morning, and the suspects made off with cold hard cash.
The Shack was targeted most recently. Owner Scott Williamson said he has never seen anything like this before.
“They not only stole from me but my family and the employees and all their families as well," Williamson said.
Police say the other businesses targeted were Three Stars Restaurant, El Rey’s Mexican Restaurant, The Loft, Clinton Chiropractic, K&M’s the Yak Shak, Floyd & Associates and The Flower Corner.
“One was at 3:00 in the morning and this last one was at 5,” Clinton Police Chief Michael Reidy said.
The last one also had video, which police are using to track down the thief.
They're also looking outside of Clinton, where other recent break-ins had a similar M.O.
“Macon County, the city of Lincoln has had some break-ins, where they had nine of their businesses on their square broken into, which might correlate with our square getting hit as well," Reidy said.
As police piece together leads, they're asking business owners to be vigilant.
“Make sure you lock your doors," Reidy said. "Of course and one thing that burglars do not like is light and I guess the one is a lot, we have not had any business that was hit that has an alarm system," Reidy said.
Meanwhile, Williamson has made his own changes to make sure The Shack doesn't become the new hot spot for burglaries.
“Not keeping as much money in the restaurant and getting the money to the banks secured as soon as we can," Williamson said.
