Quinn's Office: No Plan for Paying Off Bills
Gov. Pat Quinn's budget director initially reported that work is underway to pay down some of the state's $8 billion debt. He said the governor wants to work with lawmakers on a refinancing plan and that the governor would present lawmakers with a proposal for refinancing some of the debt in the coming weeks.
Not so fast. The governor's office later suggested the director overstated the progress and there is no plan in the works.
Illinois is months behind on paying some bills. That's forcing many nonprofit agencies that do work for the state to fire staff, borrow money, and delay paying salaries.
