Teacher Accused of Sexual Assault Previously Taught at Middle School
The Lanphier High School teacher charged with criminal sexual assault previously held another role in Springfield's District 186. That's one of the new details we're learning about 36-year-old Jennifer Tyree. The English teacher remains in jail on $100,000 bond after police arrested her for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student.
We've learned Jennifer Tyree student-taught at Washington Middle School. She's a first-year English teacher at Lanphier--her first full-time teaching position in Illinois. State records show she just received her teaching certificate in July of last year.
The board approved her hire on the first day of school to fill a last-minute opening. A spokesman confirmed Tyree's contract is for one year, while the district searches for a long-term replacement. She's making about $40,000.
But as we told you last week, Tyree doesn't have the proper endorsement to teach English at the high school level. She's certified to teach middle school language arts.
We're told the district plans to evaluate its hiring practices for temporary teachers. In the meantime, Tyree remains on unpaid administrative leave and behind bars. District 186 has 30 days to determine her employment status.
Police said more charges could follow after a second student came forward late last week, claiming to have had sex with the teacher.
