Community Groups Register Voters
Faith Coalition for the Common Good decided to team up with the C. Lee Carey Neighborhood Association to give residents on the east side one more chance at registering.
"We thought it would be a good idea to do a community wide last chance voter registration drive here in the park. That way it is easily accessible to everyone," says Pam Chandler with the Faith Coalition.
The organizations chose to have the event in Cox Park. This gave east side residents an opportunity to meet local politicians, something that volunteers believe is a positive for the community. East side resident, Tom Hutchinson said,"I hope people get engaged in the process, especially city government."
Candidates came out and brought with them hot dogs, chips, and of course registration forms. Representatives from the Faith Coalition did not let the chilly day interrupt their plans to have more voters this election day.
"For a lot of people, they're disengaged and disillusioned and what we want people to be is engaged and illusioned. Have a vision for what our city can be," said Chandler.
Volunteers expected to have over 100 people register today. They didn't quite meet the mark but this didn't put a damper on their moods.Chandler went on to say, "Even though it's cold today, a lot of people came out and registered to vote. And just getting one registered voter made it all worth it."
